It’s an important part of our history and soon the Barrie cenotaph will have a new place to call home.
A heavy crane was brought in to move the cenotaph to its new location, just 90 feet away from where it currently is.
It’s estimated that the cenotaph, plus its foundation, weigh about 195,000 pounds. Before it was moved, a special team was brought in to stabilize the monument.
“There is a lot of stress and a lot of interest, from veterans to our mayor so we've been very diligent in making sure we don't break anything,” says Gus Diamantopoulos, a spokesperson for the city.
The nearly 100-year-old cenotaph was built on the side of the square because there was a post office in the middle at the time.
Now the cenotaph will hold the prominent centre position.
