Police have charged a 16-year-old after a laser pointer was aimed at a police helicopter north of Toronto.

York Regional Police say it happened early Friday while the helicopter was helping officers stop an impaired driver.

Police say the chopper landed safely and the pilot and tactical flight officer were treated at hospital.

They were able to identify where the light was coming from and a teen was arrested and charged.

A Richmond Hill youth is charged with several offences, including two counts of assaulting a peace officer, obstructing police and mischief endangering life.

He is due in court Aug. 28.
