Students at O.D. Park Secondary School in Orillia are mourning the loss of a teenager who was killed in a terrible crash in Severn Township this morning.
The 17-year-old died after the car he was driving to school collided with a dump truck early this morning.
Three other people were inside the car – the victim’s brother and two friends – and all of them were injured.
Two of the victims had injuries serious enough to be airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre.
“There was a 15-year-old male that was airlifted to a Toronto area trauma center as well as the 15-year-old female taken down to” said OPP Const. Jim Edwards.
The dump truck driver was not injured.
The boy who died was well liked by O.D. Park staff and students.
“He was a very personable individual; one who knew an awful lot of people in our building and knew a lot of different people from different circles within the building,” said O.D. Park Principal Jim Sammon.
Students had a choice to stay in class on Tuesday, go home for the day, or talk with a member of a crisis response team.
“The counselors are here just to touch base with the students to be a supportive presence to talk about coping strategies … talk about how we can connect with each other and support each other,” said team member Danielle Mink.
Crisis response team members will remain at the school for the rest of the week.
