Health experts have confirmed a second case of West Nile virus in a human in Simcoe Muskoka this year.

"The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is reminding everyone to stay protected from mosquito bites after a person in Simcoe County was recently diagnosed with West Nile virus," a release issued on Thursday states.

Earlier this month, the health unit confirmed the first human case of West Nile, following laboratory results.

The health unit does not release information about those involved for privacy reasons.

The public is encouraged to take precautions to avoid being bitten by an infected mosquito, including wearing light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts and pants, particularly in areas where mosquitoes are more prevalent, and staying indoors during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

Health experts say while most people bitten by infected mosquitoes won't show symptoms, the virus can lead to illness.

Typical symptoms include fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, confusion, severe headache, and sudden sensitivity to light, and very rarely, can cause severe neurological issues.

Anyone experiencing symptoms should seek medical advice.
