The conviction stems from a second offence of failure to comply with an inspection order against the owner.
"A follow-up inspection of the property was conducted by Fire Prevention Officer, Captain Cale McLean, in April of this year," the release notes. "During that inspection, it was determined that multiple retrofit requirements of Section 9.3 of the Ontario Fire Code continued to not be met."
The owner will also have to pay a victim surcharge on top of the hefty fine. The surcharge is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.
Property owners are responsible for ensuring they comply with the Ontario Fire Code, the Midland Fire Department stated.
"Violations of the Ontario Fire Code can pose significant risks and can result in very tragic consequences for the occupants of those buildings," the fire department added.
