OPP issues warning about Facebook Marketplace scams

Police warn of Facebook Marketplace scam

Thinking about buying concert tickets or other items on Facebook? Police are warning the public about the risks of buying concert tickets and other items through social media, particularly Facebook Marketplace and Messenger.

Scammers are finding ways to trick people into buying fake tickets or goods, and the OPP wants the public to be aware of some key warning signs.

Reg flags include a price that seems way too good to be true. If a seller offers concert tickets for a fraction of the usual cost, police say it's worth taking a closer look.

The OPP says another warning sign is if the seller insists on payment through e-transfer, which can be risky and make it harder to recover funds once sent.

Additionally, police advise paying attention to the way sellers communicate.

Scammers often use messages riddled with grammatical errors, which should indicate that something's not right.

Police say it's best to err on the side of caution if something seems suspicious to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

It's always a good idea to verify the legitimacy of sellers and listings before making online purchases.

Finally, police say it's best to follow the old adage that if it seems too good to be true, chances are it is.
