Hundreds of people gathered at the Barrie Cenotaph to honour two soldiers killed in attacks this week.
Veterans, members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman, and Barrie MP Patrick Brown all came out to honour both Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent.
Fern Taillefer, who is the president of the Central Ontario chapter of the Peace Keeping Association, said ceremonies like this are important to remind ourselves of how much our soldiers sacrifice daily.
"People have given their lives for liberty and what we enjoy today,” he said. “We want to keep that going, and we need people to remember the sacrifices made by our soldiers."
“This is a city with deep ties to the military and when something like this happens Barrie feels it,” says Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman.
The ceremony was only a few minutes, but veterans stood guard at the cenotaph for several hours in memory of Cpl. Cirillo.
"I love my country and I love all the people in it,” said retired Master Corporal Jen MacLeod. “The good Corporal didn’t get to finish his vigil and it’s our job to take that over."
