Barrie woman launches petition for off-leash dog beach along waterfront

Jennifer Graham has walked her dog, Gordie, down the same route every day near the Barrie waterfront for the past two years. The pair take in the sights from afar because Gordie isn't allowed on the beach.

"It hit me when I realized that we really are quite secluded from the rest of the population from enjoying the waterfront," the Barrie woman said.

After witnessing several friends and neighbours receive tickets, Graham said she thought it was time the dogs had their own space on a hot summer day, so she started a petition.

"The main focus is having a nice fenced-in safe area designated for dogs to enjoy the waterfront with their family as well," said Graham.

At the time this article was published, the petition had generated more than 800 signatures.

Graham said the idea would give pets a space to cool off and keep pet owners local instead of visiting out-of-town leash-free beach areas like Innisfil and Wasaga Beach.

"I think it will increase tourism. It's a great spot to come for a walk, take your dog to the beach and then hit a patio for a drink," said Graham, who suggested creating an area along Minet's Point so the dogs are further away from the main beach.

Graham plans to keep the petition open over the next few weeks in hopes of gaining additional signatures, and then she aims to shift her focus to presenting her item to council in the fall.
