Nearly a year after it was announced in the province's budget, a Regional Innovation Centre (RIC) is finally coming to fruition in Barrie.

The province is investing $1 million into the downtown's Sandbox Centre, transforming the economic mentorship hub into a full-fledged RIC.

"In the past, we've done chat mentoring where it's just finding the right person for a few minutes, but going forward now, we'll actually have mentoring funding," said Craig Busch, founder and CEO of the Sandbox Centre. "We'll have tracked five stages to take businesses from like that initial incubation all the way to market and allowing us to really have a focus on building intellectual property insights."

RIC's aim to help entrepreneurs and innovators work through challenges in order to succeed in expanding their business ideas. The new centre in Barrie is the 17th Regional Innovation Centre in the province.

Tuesday's announcement comes after Lakehead University announced in the fall, that it planned to create a stem campus inside the downtown transit terminal.

"You can live here, you can enjoy the environment and you can grow a business here and get an incredible job," said Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall. "This regional innovation centre is a game changer for Barrie and it's a game changer for the entire region."

The Sandbox said it's tentatively aiming to launch the RIC in the spring.
