A young girl has died, following a horse accident at an annual Shelburne festival.

According to Shelburne police, a horse fell on a 12-year-old girl on Saturday afternoon just before a parade at the Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championships.

Const. Paul Neumann says the young girl was one of several horseback riders set to participate in the parade when the accident occured at the staging area.

In a release the police say, "the girl was getting ready to take part in the annual parade, when a few minutes before it started, the horse she was on reared up causing her and the horse to fall."

The girl was then taken to an Orangeville hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Const. Neumann says the girl was an experienced horseback rider and was familiar with the horse she was on.

The parade was cancelled as a result of the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
