Wild boars are becoming a common sight in the Town of Caledon.

Since mid-July boars have been spotted several times near Caledon East and they are not native to the area. So far no one has been injured by one, but experts are concerned about the animals running loose.

“They are aggressive, they’re dangerous,” says naturalist Bob Bowles. “They’ve got those tusks. They kill small preyand they would think nothing of attacking a human.”

Bowles believes the boars appear to be wild European Razor Back Boars.

Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is aware of the boars, which likely escaped from a wild game farm.

Caledon OPP Shot and killed one on a golf course last week, making residents believe there was only one left. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Sean Davis captured a photo of the animal a few days ago.

“When the one was shot the community was aware that there was just one left,” says Davis. “So, it left us all surprised when I saw two. That possibly there wold be even more than three.”

“It’s a concern as a resident, especially with small children,” says Sarah Stewart. “I would hope that if someone knew more about it they would come forward and let us know what was happening.”

Along with being a possible danger to kids and other animals in the area, naturalists say these wild boars could devastate local crops.
