Warming centres remain open in some of our communities today, two days after an ice storm swept across Southern Ontario.

In Tottenham, the Fitness and Community Centre at 139 Queen St. N. is open until 10 p.m. for anyone who needs a place to warm up.

The Town of Aurora, meanwhile, is still recovering from the storm with about 8,000 customers without power. Anyone who needs somewhere to go can head to the Aurora Seniors’ Centre at 90 John West Way, which the town says will stay open until further notice.

The town is posting updates on its Facebook page.

PowerStream crews are working with Aurora forestry workers to repair damage to a main power line.

And in the Caledon and Bolton areas, more than 16,000 customers are still offline, Hydro One reports.

There are three warming centres open there:

  • Town Hall – 6311 Old Church Rd. in Caledon East, just west of Innis Lake Road (open 24 hours)
  • Albion Bolton Community Centre, 150 Queen St. S., Bolton (open until further notice)
  • Caledon Centre for Recreation and Wellness, 14111 Regional Road 50 North, Bolton (24 hours)

In Whitchurch-Stouffville, there are also thousands of customers without power.

For those without power, the town says its facilities are open for use as warming centres.

The Stouffville Arena (12483 Ninth Line), Stouffville Clippers Sports Complex (120 Weldon Rd.), Soccer City (45 Innovator Ave.), Leisure Centre (2 Park Dr.) and the Municipal Offices (111 Sandiford Dr.) are all open on their regular hours.

Communities with power, like Barrie, Newmarket, and Orangeville, do not have warming centres open.

York Region District School Board closing all facilities for Dec. 24

Because of ongoing power outages, and the cleanup of ice, trees, and tree limbs, all YRDSB facilities, including childcare centres, will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 24. All permits for that day are also cancelled. The board will continue to update its website with the latest.
