Teen door-kicking prank causing damage in Squamish, police warn

Police in Squamish, B.C., are asking residents to be vigilant and parents to speak to their teenagers after a string of incidents involving youth kicking at doors around the community.

The Squamish RCMP says it has received “multiple” reports of youth riding in e-bikes and wearing balaclavas kicking the doors of homes and businesses, which has caused property damage and alarmed neighbours.

“These incidents are not only causing financial harm to property owners but are also creating fear and frustration within our community,” said Staff Sgt. Gareth Bradley, in a news release issued Wednesday. “We take this behaviour very seriously and are working diligently to identify those involved.”

Mounties say they have “caught” several of the youth involved, and “further enforcement actions” could follow if needed.

Other jurisdictions in B.C. and across Canada have issued similar warnings about a door-kicking prank in recent years, some saying the more destructive spin on “ding dong ditch” originates from a social media challenge.

“Police remind parents and guardians to speak with their children about the consequences of such behaviour,” the release reads. “While some may view it as a prank, the damage and distress caused can have serious repercussions.”

The detachment encouraged residents to report any similar behaviour and secure their properties by making sure doors and external lighting are in good condition.
