Oro-Medonte Fire Services were called shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday to the fire that began in the business below the tenants.

“It was a commercial cooking appliance,” said Deputy Fire Chief of Operations, Roree Payment.

The fire in the restaurant and gas station on Highway 11 at Line 5 was contained to the kitchen area.

Payment estimates there was about $15,000 worth of damage.

“All occupants were able to escape uninjured due to the presence of working smoke alarms,” he said.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office was not contacted as it was not suspicious and did not meet the fire marshal’s criteria of being suspicious or having a damage estimate over $500,000.
