Ski season has arrived: Here's what's open
Despite Mother Nature taking her time shifting from the mild fall weather, the recent blast of winter means ski season has arrived.
The snow guns at Mount St. Louis Moonstone were out in full force Thursday night in preparation of opening day Friday.
Crews have been making sure everything is ready to go for the kickoff to the family-owned ski resort’s 60th season.
“I call the free snow pennies from heaven,” said general manager Robert Huter. “We need to have the man-made base there, the natural snow doesn't take the abuse from the skiers as well as the manmade snow, but it just looks wonderful out there.”
As part of it’s 60th anniversary, Elfriede Huter, who along with her husband opened the ski resort in 1964, rode the first chairlift of the season.

Over the summer, the family invested in new pipes, groomers, and additional rental equipment.
“I'm just itching to get my skis on,” Huter added.
Mount St. Louis isn’t the only ski resort open for business on Friday, in Barrie, Horseshoe Resort will welcome skiers back for another season on the slopes.
And Ontario’s largest mountain ski resort, Blue Mountain Resort, will open on Saturday.
Snow Valley plans to open for skiing and snowboarding next weekend on Sat., Dec. 14.
“Although recent snowfalls have been generous to our region, we didn’t catch as much as some of our neighbors. But not to worry, we’re on it,” the resort staff noted.
Last year, Blue Mountain Resort opened for the season on December 7. Horseshoe Resort, just outside of Barrie, was the first to open the 2023/24 season on December 1.
