Road extension in Barrie's south end to open ahead of schedule

Share

The opening of a much-anticipated new road in Barrie that is expected to relieve traffic congestion in the city's south end is ahead of schedule.

The City says the $16 million Bryne Drive South extension that connects Harvie Road to Caplan Avenue will open later this month.

"Finishing touches are underway," the City noted on Tuesday. "The contractor is preparing to pave surface asphalt this month."

The extension runs parallel to Highway 400 and is designed to improve traffic flow, easing congestion along Mapleview Drive.

The new road will include five lanes, with bike lanes and sidewalks.

The Bryne Drive project's north extension from Harvie Road to Essa Road is stalled in the design phase, with the City citing property acquisitions as the reason the project has been pushed.

Its completion date is now estimated to be in 2029.
