Provincial police want to make residents aware of a growing trend of thefts targeting shoppers.

Police say that in recent weeks, officers have responded to several incidents where "some sticky-handed criminals prey on local shoppers," stealing debit cards, credit cards and cash right from the bags and purses of unsuspecting residents.

In each case, police say the thieves took advantage of moments when shoppers were distracted and their belongings were unattended.

Police encourage shoppers to take extra precautions, including keeping their purses or bags on them at all times and avoiding leaving them in shopping carts, even for a moment.

Police recommend keeping bags zipped shut and storing banking cards and cash in compartments not easily accessed to reduce the risk of theft. Shoppers are also encouraged to keep their bags in front of them, making it more difficult for thieves to access their belongings.

"Be mindful of who may be lingering around you throughout the store," police stated.

They also say to be wary of strangers "engaging in convoluted stories or randomly asking for your assistance to draw you away from your cart, these individuals are usually not working alone."

If you or someone you know has been a victim of this type of theft, the OPP advises contacting your bank immediately to secure your accounts and then reporting the incident at 1-888-310-1122.
