Police say an extensive excavation and search of an area near Bowmanville turned up no new evidence in the case of a teen who vanished 55 years ago.

Durham regional police excavated the area after receiving new information in the case of Noreen Greenley, who was 13 when she disappeared in September 1963.

Officers dug two trenches -- one that was 45 metres long and another that was 30 metres -- that were about two metres deep, and used metal detectors that could penetrate another metre.

But they say officers weren't able to find any evidence.

Police are asking anyone with information about Greenley's case to come forward.

They say their homicide unit revisited the case in 2005, but her disappearance remains unsolved.
