Police and GO Transit officers were at the Newmarket bus terminal Wednesday showing commuters an artist’s rendering of the suspect in a violent sexual assault that took place on a nearby pathway early New Year's Day.

"We wanted to do whatever we could to support the York Regional Police in finding this suspect," said Anne Marie Aikins with Metrolinx.

According to police, an 18-year-old woman was walking along a pathway that runs parallel to Davis Drive on Friday, at around 3 a.m., when police say she was approached by a man. The victim was coming from the GO bus terminal.

The man allegedly grabbed the woman, forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her. A man, who police say witnessed the assault, has come forward to speak with investigators.

"This was a significantly violent incident, the viticm was taken to hospital for her injuries," said Const. Laura Nicole.

On Monday, police released a composite sketch, which shows a man between the ages of 30 and 50 with a lean build. The suspect is believed to be 5’9” tall. He was last seen wearing a light grey jacket, a black hoodie, a black neck warmer and black boots.

Police have been canvassing the area since the weekend and say they have a better idea of who they're looking for.

"Hopefully somebody sees this (composite sketch) and can identify that person."

Police say they do not believe the Jan. 1 attack is connected to a rash of sex assaults in the vicinity of the Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket in recent months.

Police believe there may be more witnesses and are asking anyone with information to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers.
