More than 2,500 people ran in Barrie on Sunday to remember those they’ve lost, support those still fighting, or celebrate those that have beaten breast cancer.

"It means everything to be a part of this event, it's truly overwhelming,” says 28-year-old breast cancer survivor Nicole Jannie. “I mean the crowd and the atmosphere; it's truly a blessing to be a part of the event."

One in nine Canadian women will be affected by breast cancer at some point in her life.

The Run for the Cure event took place across Canada in more than 65 communities, including Alliston, Collingwood, and Muskoka.

The event raises more than $25,000,000 every year to go towards breast cancer early detection research as well as treatment.

"Breast cancer - the incidents have been rising, but the survival is dramatically improved,” said Dr. Raplh George from the CIBC Breast Centre at St. Michaels Hospital. “Even in the time that I've been working in breast cancer, the probability of dying from breast cancer has been reduced by 43 percent."

The run in Barrie raised more than $200,000.
