One person has died following a helicopter crash east of Aurora north of the Buttonville Airport.

Police say the wreckage was found in a field just north of Preston Lake in the Whitchurch-Stouffville area on Tuesday around 3 p.m.

Investigators say the pilot was the lone occupant of the aircraft. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Some reports suggest the weather at the time may have been a factor.

Essential Helicopters, a flight training school and charter company in North Bay wrote in a statement, “It’s been confirmed one of our aircraft and one of our senior pilots were involved in a crash.  And we’re working with the Transportation Safety Board and Transport Canada at this time.”

Police closed Warden Avenue between St. John’s Sideroad and Aurora Road while they investigated.

The road has since reopened.
