Orillia OPP is warning the public about a phone scam, where the caller poses as an agent from the Canada Revenue Agency.
According to police, there have been reports of residents receiving a call from someone claiming to be an employee for CRA. The caller tells the resident that they owe money to the government and demand personal information. The caller’s state if the money is not paid in full an arrest warrant will be issued.
Investigators say the fraudsters use technology that allows them to have any phone number show up on call display.
Police are reminding residents that personal or banking information should not be given out until the requester has been confirmed to be legitimate. They also want the public to confirm the caller's identity by looking up the business or company phone number from a trusted source and then return the call.
