Ontario Provincial Police recovered stolen cryptocurrency valued at roughly $10,000 Canadian by obtaining a special warrant allowing investigators to trace the location of the digital assets.

The OPP Cyber Investigations Team began its probe into the alleged theft following a report of a hacked cryptocurrency wallet.

Last month, the team obtained a warrant to search for the digital assets, which were then seized and returned to the rightful owner.

“This investigation demonstrates the OPP's commitment to addressing cybercrime and seizing digital assets from criminal networks,” the OPP noted.

Police note for anyone choosing to purchase cryptocurrencies, there aren’t the same fraud protections that there is with credit cards.

“If you choose to purchase cryptocurrency, do so from well-known and reputable exchanges, and obtain hardware wallets directly from the manufacturer,” provincial police added.
