Public elementary school teachers in Ontario will be in the classroom on Monday as the first phase of a province-wide work-to-rule campaign begins.

The first phase of the job action includes no standardized tests, no comments on report cards, and teachers won’t participate in any meetings or Ministry of Education professional development initiatives.

For now, extracurricular activities and field trips will continue. However, the president of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario wouldn’t close the door on adding to the job action.

"This strike action is incremental in nature," Sam Hammond said Friday. "It will continue in its current form until (the government and school boards') demands are withdrawn from the bargaining table or ETFO deems that further actions are required."

ETFO represents 76,000 teachers across the province and has been unsuccessful in negotiating a new contract with the province for eight months.

No new talks have been planned.
