Man, 19, charged in connection with deadly police-involved shooting in Innisfil community

A 19-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fatal police-involved shooting in an Innisfil, Ont. community nearly four months ago.

On the afternoon of August 15, South Simcoe police officers responded to a call about an altercation at a home on Shoreview Drive near Whitecap Drive and Dalkab Crescent.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has since invoked its mandate, limiting the information that could be revealed; however, following the incident, the SIU reported that four officers fired their guns at two 19-year-old men.

One was pronounced dead at the hospital and the other was taken to a trauma centre in Toronto in critical condition.

Those who live in the area told CTV News the two men are twin brothers, but police have not confirmed those details.

At the request of South Simcoe police, Ontario Provincial Police initiated a separate investigation from the SIU into the circumstances before officers arrived at the home and the moments immediately after.

While the OPP didn’t disclose many details, it did reveal Dylan Hatton, 19, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, assaulting an officer with a weapon and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

He has since been released from custody with a court date scheduled for early next month. The allegations against the accused have not been tested in court.

Provincial police continue to encourage anyone with information on the investigation to contact them at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 to remain anonymous.

The SIU’s probe into whether the actions of the officers were justified that day remains ongoing.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates incidents involving police where death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm has occurred.
