Officer cleared of any wrongdoing in fatal Springwater crash involving young driver

Ontario's watchdog has ended its investigation into whether a police officer's actions resulted in a fatal collision in Springwater last month involving a young driver.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) invoked its mandate following the crash in the area of Crossland Road on July 3 that claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy and seriously injured his passenger, a 17-year-old girl.

The SIU says the officer clocked the vehicle speeding 118 kilometres per hour along Crossland Road and had to do a three-point turn to follow the car to pull it over.

The agency's investigation revealed the driver lost control of the vehicle and went off the roadway into a field before stopping about 500 metres from the road.

The driver died in the crash.

Investigators with the government agency said a review of video footage showed that roughly a minute and a half had elapsed from when the officer turned to pursue the vehicle. The report notes the officer didn't appear to have the car in sight from that point.

"It is evident that the officer did nothing that could conceivably attract criminal liability in connection with the collision. The file has been closed," the SIU concluded.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates any police conduct that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
