York Regional officers with the homicide unit say a 66-year-old Newmarket man has been identified as the victim of a fatal stabbing.

A 56-year-old man is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Dennis Sweet after officers found the victim on Monday during a welfare check at an apartment complex in the area of Timothy and Prospect Streets.

Police say Sweet was pronounced dead at the scene.

They say this was an isolated incident, and the victim and suspect were known to each other.

Investigators hope to speak to anyone with information on the incident.
