Health experts are urging residents to be cautious after recent positive West Nile virus findings.

"The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is reminding residents to protect themselves against mosquito bites following confirmation that mosquitoes collected from a trap in Alliston tested positive," the health unit stated on Wednesday.

SMDHU did not specify exactly where the pool of mosquitoes was located.

The virus circulates between birds and some species of mosquitoes and can be transmitted to humans bitten by an infected mosquito.

"Although most people will not become sick if bitten by an infected mosquito, WNv can cause severe illness in some people," health experts noted.

Symptoms of the West Nile virus include fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, confusion, severe headache, and sudden sensitivity to light.

"In very rare cases, the virus may cause serious neurological illness," SMDHU added.

Health experts recommend seeking medical advice for anyone experiencing symptoms of West Nile virus.

SMDHU said the risk of contracting the virus is greatest in the later summer months.
