The man accused in the brutal beating of a teenaged girl in Shelburne appeared in court Tuesday. It's a case that still has police asking for help.
19-year-old Jade Cowan is charged with five serious offences; attempted murder, assault with a weapon, choking and two counts of aggravated assault.
Cowan is alleged to have attacked a 14-year-old Shelburne girl near a park in the northwest part of town last month. The young girl was found covered in blood and badly hurt.
“The victim was initially transported to Headwaters Hospital in Orangeville, and was subsequently moved to Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto due to the seriousness of her injuries,” says Shelburne Police Chief Kent Moore.
“She has recently been released from the hospital and has been recovering from her injuries. It will be a long road for recovery.”
Police say Cowan was arrested two hours after the incident took place. He appeared in an Orangeville court Tuesday. Cowan now has lawyer but has not had a bail hearing yet.
Shelburne police and the OPP are still working together in this case. They're asking the public for help in finding what they're saying could be "key evidence."
“We are looking for any black coloured clothing that may have been discarded in the northwest section in the town of Shelburne,” continued Chief Moore. “We are asking for our citizens to help us out, if they find any dark coloured clothing in that section of town do not touch or handle it, please contact us right away.”
Police say the victim and Cowan knew each other for a short period of time, but they were not dating. A publication ban prevents us from reporting any information that could identify the victim or disclose any evidence in this case at this stage.
CTV did try and speak with Cowan's lawyer today, but she said she was not available for comment. Cowan will be back in court August 26.
