The temperature was a bone-chilling -40 degrees with the wind chill in some parts of our region on Sunday.

Driver David Schrader says even his truck was affected by the cold.

"We came out to start the truck and she wouldn't even turn over,” he said. “They're supposed to be able to start right up. I'm shocked that they didn't."

Tow truck operators say they’ve responded to hundreds of calls for dead batteries and frozen fuel lines.

"This has definitely been the busiest day,” said Dave Blake from B&B Towing. “We've called guys in on their days off. We've got everybody in just trying to keep up with the demand."

Environment Canada says it was -28.5 degrees this morning in Barrie, and the record cold on this day was set in 1987 at -29 degrees.

Even at the Snowman Mania festival in Wasaga Beach, where winter is celebrated, people were complaining.

“The fireworks are being cancelled simply because of the cold weather,” said Wasaga Beach mayor Brian Smith. “We’re moving the outdoor concert tonight from Stonebridge to the RecPlex, because of the cold weather. We want people to enjoy it, so it’s better to do it inside than not at all."

Environment Canada says it won’t be getting warmer any time soon.
