Firefighters are continuing to put out hotspots at a large brush fire in Ramara Township.

The 15 hectare brush fire broke out in the area of Concession Road D & E in Sebright on Monday afternoon.

Seventy firefighters and three water bombers have contained the flames, but high winds still pose a problem.

As of Monday at 8 p.m., there were still a number of hot spots in the area.

Firefighters are still facing dry conditions and high winds. Crews are expected to remain at the fire until nightfall and will return to the scene on Tuesday.

An evacuation order is being put in place for B-Town Group Quarry and one nearby home. It is unclear how many people will be affected.

Fire danger rating

Despite some rain on Monday, the fire danger rating in Clearview Township and Springwater Township have been set high.

“We're looking for a nice rainfall that has an opportunity to sink into the ground and let the ground absorb that,” says Springwater fire chief Tony Van Dam.  “If we just get the heavy downpours and the severe thunderstorms most of that water just runs off into the ditches.”

Van Dam says if they don’t see more rain there will be a fire ban.

Fire ratings in Gravenhurst and Bracebridge are moderate. People across the region are being encouraged to think twice before having a fire and the strong winds are certainly unpredictable.

“With the wind that we have today that's going to fan that fire and make that fire that much quicker.”
