One person has been sent to hospital after being stabbed during a home invasion in southwest Barrie on Friday night.

According to Barrie police, the two men entered the home on Sundew Drive at around 10:40 p.m. with the intention of stealing cash and electronics. One of the men was wearing a monkey mask and the other, a bandanna.

Two adults and five teens were home when the suspects busted into the house. That’s when an argument erupted between the man in the mask and the homeowner. Police say the argument escalated and the man stabbed the homeowner in the stomach.

Despite the stab wound, the homeowner was able to hold on to the suspect until officers arrived. The other man was able to escape and was last seen headed towards Bear Creek.

“He fled the scene on foot, where he entered a waiting vehicle driven by a female,” says Det. Const. Adam Morris. “The vehicle is described as a dark older model vehicle, possibly blue or grey.”

The suspect is described as a while male in his late 30s, 5’10”, and about 165 pounds. He was last seen wearing a grey hoodie, a grey hat, blue jeans and a backpack.

The suspect wearing the monkey mask, a 25-year-old Barrie man, is charged with break and enter, robbery, disguise with intent, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, uttering threats and breach of probation.

The homeowner’s injuries are described as being minor. Police say this was a targeted attack and there’s no risk to public safety.

“I’m shocked because it's a quiet neighbourhood. There's nothing really much violent that happens around here,” says neighbour Arlene Green.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
