York Regional Police say a 99-year-old man has died after being struck by a vehicle in Newmarket.

Investigators believe the man was operating a mobility scooter along the sidewalk on Leslie Street on Monday at around 12:30 p.m., when he was struck by a pickup truck while crossing a commercial driveway.

Police say the vehicle that struck the man was travelling at a low speed. The man was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The York Regional Police technical traffic reconstruction unit is now probing the scene of the crash.

Leslie Street between Srigley Street and Gorham Street is expected to be closed for several hours for the investigation.
