Local WWII vet turns 101
World War II veteran Allister ‘Mac’ MacDonald celebrated his 101st birthday at Stayner Legion Branch 457 on Saturday afternoon.
Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) flight engineer, eight-year Stayner mayor and 75-year Legion member are just some of the centenarian’s many accolades. ‘Mac’ was joined by family, friends, fellow veterans and community members for his special day.

“A lot of pleasure and gratitude that I’m still around to welcome them,” said MacDonald of his celebration.
‘Mac’ also received a piping ceremony and a special pin for his 75 years of membership with the Legion.
“He is one of the few Second World War veterans who are still living among us,” said Bill Sergeant, president of the RCAF Association 441 Huronia Wing. “He’s got so much to live for and has given back so much. I think that’s what keeps him going.”
‘Mac’s’ family and fellow veterans agree that he is in excellent shape for his age. He still walks up and down his stairs on a daily basis.
“Dad has been fiercely independent,” said Kaye Munroe, MacDonald’s daughter. “Dad has lived a long and healthy life, and he just did what he was supposed to do, and he doesn’t feel that he deserves all the accolades that he gets. But he does.”
“I just hope that when I’m in my late 80’s, early 90’s, that I’m in that good a shape, let alone if I ever make the century mark,” added Sergeant.
When ‘Mac’ was asked about his secret for living beyond 100 years old, he simply replied, “Have a good woman.”
