Police in Barrie warn residents about a rising trend in porch piracy after several reports in recent weeks.

The local authorities say four incidents of thefts had been reported online since mid-October in the northwest and southwest areas of the city.

Police say the incidents appear to be random and typically happen around 3 p.m.

“It will likely rise with people starting to place holiday orders online,” warns Peter Leon, Barrie Police Services corporate communications coordinator.

Police say they sometimes obtain video footage, like that from doorbell cameras, which can help to identify those responsible.

“These are crimes of opportunity that can be avoided if precautions are made in advance of the delivery,” Leon added.

Police recommend anyone expecting a delivery to have a neighbour pick it up if you can’t be home “before a porch pirate does.”
