Emergency crews battled heavy smoke and flames after a fire broke out in a garage at a Barrie home Thursday afternoon.

Assistant Deputy Chief Eric McFadden says a bypasser noticed smoke coming from the residence on Lillian Crescent in the city's west end and called 911 while banging on the door to alert the occupants.

Everyone was out of the home when crews arrived.

The thick smoke migrated into the house, causing damage.

No injuries were reported.

McFadden believes at least five people will be displaced for the night because of the damages.

Crews will return on Friday to probe the cause of the fire.

Damage is estimated at $100,000.
