The City of Barrie says pumpkins with candles and decorations removed can be put in the green bin.
If the pumpkin doesn’t fit inside the bin or causes it to exceed the 45-pound weight limit, the City says to place it on top or next to the bin.
Pumpkins can also be cut up and placed in a composter or help enrich soil as it decomposes when buried in a garden.
Several animal sanctuaries across the region accept pumpkin donations as a tasty treat for several animals, but experts warn not to throw them in the woods because too much pumpkin can make some animals sick.
They also make great soups, pies and bread if they look fresh and feel firm.
Pumpkins should not be put in the garbage to be sent to the landfill where they can break down and release methane gas.
They should also not be put in the garbage disposal or toilet.
