A woman who used to live in Aurora has been found dead in Jamaica.

Her family isn't speaking publicly about what happened, but they’re taking to social media to remember Shirley Lewis-McFarlane.

Lewis-McFarlane, 53, was found dead in a home she was staying at in northern Jamaica. Her body was found Monday afternoon.  As police there continue to investigate, word of her death is now hitting home.

She was found by a neighbour, in a bedroom at a home she was renting. The home is in the popular tourist area Discovery Bay - this according to media reports from Jamaica.

The Jamaica Observer, which is a local news website, is reporting that when she was found she had bruises to her face. There were no signs of forced entry to the home.

Police haven't yet identified any suspects. CTV Barrie tried to reach police today but was told nobody is available to talk to us until Monday.

Lewis-McFarlane had reportedly visited the island several times over the years and she had recently moved to the country.

A Facebook tribute page has been set up where many family and friends are expressing condolences and shock over her death. The mother of three is being remembered as a caring person who was full of life.

"This doesn't seem real. All of this -- her death, the news stories, the little details that go with trying to plan for her remembrance," wrote a woman who identified herself as Lewis-McFarlane's daughter.

"Mom, we'll try to give you everything you would have wanted. You didn't deserve any of what happened, but you deserve a beautiful place to rest," Jasmine Gavigan wrote.

Stephanie Dawber-Richards, who said she used to live next door to Lewis-McFarlane and her three children, said her friend will be sorely missed.

"Shirley, you are a fantastic woman and mother and will always be remembered for the remarkable woman you were," she wrote.

"RIP Shirley, may your rays of happiness shine down on us and fill our lives with the joy you had."

The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of the situation and is helping the woman’s family. An autopsy is expected to find out how Lewis-McFarlane died.
