Blizzard and snow squall warnings issued with hazardous travel expected

Prepare for some wicked weather expected to hit the region on Wednesday, with heavy snowfall up to 80 centimetres possible and gusty winds creating dicey travel conditions.

Environment Canada issued blizzard and snow squall warnings for several areas across Simcoe County, Muskoka and Grey County.

Blizzard Warning

Areas around Blue Mountains, Owen Sound and Grey County are expected to experience hazardous lake-effect snow squalls beginning late Wednesday and continuing into Friday.

The weather event will bring strong westerly winds up to 80 km/h in the overnight hours into Thursday morning.

The weather agency advises road closures are likely given the poor conditions expected.

Environment Canada issued a strong warning regarding hitting the roads during the nasty weather.

“Travel is not recommended. If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone. If you become stranded in a vehicle do not leave. The vehicle offers a form of protection from the cold. A single person walking through the snow is harder to find than a stranded car or truck.”

Snow Squall Warning

Simcoe County and Muskoka are under a snow squall warning.

Areas around Barrie could see up to 40 centimetres of the white stuff, while those in Muskoka may receive up to 80 centimetres of the white stuff.

Westerly winds up to 60 km/h will accompany the squalls, resulting in widespread blowing snow and significantly reduced visibility on the roads, the agency added.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve,” Environment Canada stated.

Again, the weather is anticipated to continue over the next 48 hours.
