TORONTO - Paul Philip Koenderman, the former CEO of Aecon Industrial, has been identified as the motorist killed Wednesday morning when his SUV was hit by wheel that flew off a truck on Highway 400 north of Toronto.

Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt identified Koenderman, 69, as the driver of the SUV who was taken to hospital after the accident.

The company confirmed his death.

Schmidt said a southbound tractor-trailer lost a set of tandem tires from its right rear side and they bounced into the northbound lanes, hitting Koenderman's SUV, causing him to lose control and drive into a ditch.

The impact crushed the hood, shattered the windshield and crumpled half of the SUV's roof.

Paramedics freed Koenderman, who was trapped under the buckled metal. He was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries and died late Wednesday night.
