A fifth man involved in the notorious execution plan of Jennifer Pan’s parents pleaded guilty in court on Friday.
Eric Carty, 35, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit the murders of Pan’s mother, Bich Pan and her father Hann Pan.
Bich Pan was shot and killed while Hann Pan was shot in the face but survived to tell the police how three armed intruders burst into his upscale Markham home.
Pan, then 24, hired the men to fake a home invasion and kill her parents so she could have her inheritance and marry Daniel Wong. She and Wong along with Lenford Crawford and David Mylvaganam are all serving life sentences after a jury found them guilty of first-degree murder last December.
During the trial Carty was suddenly severed from the case because his lawyer became ill.
“Eric Carty is a repeat, violent offender with multiple convictions,” said Crown Michele Rumble. “While he was wanted by police for murder he conspired to kill Jennifer Pan’s parents.”
In December 2009 Carty shot and killed Kirk Matthews, 24, as he exited his vehicle after visiting his mother’s home on San Pietroway, near Islington Ave. and Steeles Ave W.in Toronto. He was convicted of first-degree murder of Matthews and sentenced to life in prison January 14, 2014.
“Eric Carty agreed to the execution-style killing of two innocent strangers in their own home,” said the Crown. “It was a plan hatched by Jennifer Pan to kill the two people who loved her most.”
The Crown said Pan’s father and brother, who testified at the trial, remain ‘devastated.’
Justice Michelle Fuerst agreed to the joint submission for an 18-year prison sentence with no chance of parole for nine years – even though he is not eligible for parole for the Matthews murder until 2036.
Fuerst will address whether or not Carty should get ‘enhanced’ credit for pretrial custody on December 7.
