Fire crews spent the day putting out hot spots after flames destroyed a barn in Oro-Medonte.

Flames lit up the early morning sky on Tuesday, as fire ravaged the Penetanguishene Road barn at around 6:30 a.m.

"Our bedroom just lit up orange. I quickly looked out the window and could just see the barn was in flames, biggest flames I’ve ever seen,” says neighbour Mel Nadon.

Firefighters from three different departments raced to the scene, but it was already too late. The building was destroyed, but crews were able to prevent flames from spreading to a home and another storage barn.

The barn was being rented out by Sherwood Stables to house 15 horses. The equine weren’t in the building when the fire broke out and were all safely located.

“Even though this is very traumatic the fact that there are no fatalities, I'm very relieved,” says Melissa Sherwood. "In the winter time, they're in every night. I'm just glad winter has held off."

It’s still not clear what caused the fire, but the barn is considered a total loss. Damage has been set at $385,000.

The investigation is ongoing.
