Cookstown Cancer Classic raises funds for RVH and cancer care centre

Hundreds of classic cars will soon be rolling into Cookstown for the inaugural Cancer Classic.

On August 13, over 300 classic and custom cars from around the region will gather at the Georgian Bay Steam Show grounds.

Organizers say the car show is intended to raise money for the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre and RVH.

The event will also feature food vendors, prize giveaways and hot air balloon rides.

“As a first show, I’m hoping for between $8,000 and $10,000. Whether that’s going to happen or not, I’ve got no idea,” said Rick Shaples, Cookstown Cancer Classic organizer.

“Anything’s a good start, it’s all going in the right direction – it’s all going to the hospital – it’s all going to the cancer clinic,” he said.

“We’re going to do the best we can and make the best of the day.”

Shaples was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2017 and created the Cookstown Cancer Classic as a way to give back to local health centres.
