Construction for affordable housing begins in Bradford West Gwillimbury
New construction for affordable housing in Bradford West Gwillimbury is now underway.
The new building, being worked on in partnership with the town and County of Simcoe, will add 50 new affordable units toward the county's 2,685-unit target, which it has since surpassed.
"Our goal for our ten-year strategy was 2685, we're sitting well above that at 2700," said Brad Spiewak, Social Housing Director at the County of Simcoe. "So for this, we will have one-bedroom units for senior citizens, as well as two and three-bedroom units for families."
While the County passed its target, Spiewak said it's still not enough to meet demand. Over 200 applicants have already applied for the new project despite being in its early phase of construction.
"Everybody is searching for affordable, attainable housing," said James Leduc, Bradford West Gwillimbury Mayor. "Bradford is no different than any other community in Simcoe County."
Drainage realignment and storm pipe installation started on Monday, causing delays along Simcoe Road near Marshview Boulevard and Edward Street.
The township and Simcoe County expect to complete the project near the end of next year.
