The City of Barrie is encouraging residents to clean out their closets and participate in Textile Collection Week to help reduce waste in the landfill.

Residents can set unwanted textiles, including clothing, shoes, linens, and other fabric-based materials, for curbside pickup from Sept. 9 to Sept. 13.

Textile collection days follow curbside waste collection days, so if your waste collection is Monday, put your textiles to the curb by 7 a.m. on Tuesday. For residents whose waste collection is on Fridays, textile pickup is on Monday.

The City asks that all textiles be placed in a clear plastic bag, labelled 'Textiles' and left at the curb by 7 a.m. to ensure they are collected.

"The bags will be picked up by Recycling Rewards trucks before 5 p.m. on your textile collection day," the City stated.

There is no limit to the number of bags containing textiles residents can put curbside for pickup.

"Donations support Cornerstone to Recovery, a non-profit, charitable agency that provides community-based recovery programs for individuals and families experiencing and impacted by addiction," the City noted.

Residents are reminded that regular household waste, recycling, and organics should be placed in their usual containers. The City also emphasizes the importance of ensuring all items are clean, dry, and free of contaminants, such as oil or paint.

The City holds two curbside textile collections each year, in the spring and again in the fall.
