Classic car stolen in Town of Mono

Share

Provincial police are investigating the alleged theft of a classic car from an address on 25 Sideroad in the Town of Mono.

Police say thieves stole a black 1959 Austin Healy sometime between Oct. 1 and 10.

The incident prompted police to provide crime prevention tips for vehicle owners as automotive thefts have become a growing trend.

Vehicle owners are encouraged never to leave an unattended vehicle running, lock doors, roll up windows, keep registration and proof of insurance in a purse or wallet, not in the glovebox, and always park in a well-lit area.

And police say electronic auto theft is on the rise with more vehicles equipped with technology, like keyless entry fobs.

Police say thieves use technology equipped to "boost and exploit" the vehicle's key fob signal. "This allows for a thief to unlock and start an engine of a vehicle remotely."

Owners are urged to lock vehicle windows and doors and keep keys in a secure spot out of sight. Police suggest using a Faraday pouch, a steering wheel lock or a car alarm to deter thieves. They also recommend inserting a car tracker to monitor the vehicle's location if it is stolen.

"Police and its insurance industry partners also want to raise public awareness about the opportunities for criminals who intend to steal personal identification from unsecured vehicles," the OPP noted, adding valuables, including licences, vehicle insurance, ownerships, passports, and all mobile devices, should never be kept in plain view for opportunistic thieves.
