Canadian Forces Military Police are investigating the tragic death of a child at CFB Borden on Thursday.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. in a residential area of the base.

County of Simcoe Paramedics say they quickly responded to the crash and provided advanced medical procedures while transporting the child to hospital.

“First responders arrived on scene immediately, the individual was transported to a local hospital and the medical doctor shortly after pronounced the individual as dead. Giving this occurred only last evening the investigation is still ongoing to determine the circumstances and exact cause of this tragic accident,” said Col. Carl Doyon, base commander of CFB Borden.

Col. Doyon says the tragedy happened in a residential area on the base where the victim was struck by a car that was backing up.

Military Police have jurisdiction on the base but the investigation has been handed over to The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service which handles serious incidents with the military.

The OPP’s Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit was called in to assist with the initial investigation.

There is no word on any charges at this time but no military vehicles were involved. Base officials say the driver and the family that suffered the loss are members of the military.

“We really want to express our sympathy to all of these affected by the tragic accident,” added Col. Doyon.

The name and age of the child are not being released to help protect the family’s privacy.
