Some NHL stars took part in a charity baseball game in Midhurst on Saturday to remember a young man.

Keir Baumgarten was killed in a car accident on Old Barrie Road in October of 2013 and to honour him, his dad and a lot of friends -including Tampa Bay Lightning’s Steven Stamkos and former Barrie Colts goaltender Michael Hutchinson - took part in a slow-pitch game and a homerun hitting derby.

The homerun derby before the game between Team Stamkos and the three-time provincial softball champions Borrelli’s Baummers had many of the NHL stars looking up for inspiration.

“I don’t think we’re used to playing in parks quite this big so some of the guys are a little nervous coming out here and playing baseball,” says Steve Stamkos.

The event was raising money for underprivileged kids to play sports and music. Steve Stamkos’ father Chris knows how expensive playtime can be.

“It’s very costly to play hockey and I remember going through the process and there’s many families who can’t afford to pay for the equipment,” says Chris Stamkos.

Other NHL stars like Steve Downie and Michael Hutchinson came out to play a little ball too.

“This is awesome, coming out here and supporting a great cause like this,” says Hutchinson.

Ernie Baumgarten, Keir’s father, organized the event all in memory of his son and says he would be happy this was held.

“Oh I know he is watching.”

Team Stamkos won the game 8-7 in an extra inning and all the money raised will got help other kids through Kidsport and MusiCounts.
