Residents of a small community in the City of Kawartha Lakes are being advised to boil their water.

Richard Ovcharovich, manager of the environmental health program at the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ride District Health Unit, says a drop in pressure in the water system in Sonya led to the advisory.

Ovcharovich says any drop in pressure in the water supply system risks contaminants making their way back through the pipes.

He says it’s the third time recently the system has lost pressure there, putting the safety of the water at risk.  The municipality has called in an electrician to look into the issue.

The advisory says residents have to boil water that’s to be used for human consumption. People can shower, as long as they don’t swallow any water, and people should try and avoid tub baths.

The boil water advisory could be lifted Friday if the second water sample, being taken Wednesday afternoon, comes back clear.
