Correction: An earlier version of this article stated the new waste collection program for the City of a Barrie begins on Mon., Sept. 9, 2024. It, in fact, begins in 2025.

In one year, Barrie's new garbage collection will begin.

While some may query the use of the larger bins, big carts have advantages: they are easy to roll, don't need heavy lifting or dragging, and help keep neighbourhoods cleaner by keeping waste contained and protected against wind and animals.

Residents will receive one cart for organics and one for garbage; yard waste will be collected manually.

Household recycling will be collected by a contractor retained by Circular Materials.

The city will have provided residents with standard-sized carts next September.

The city is currently looking at options for residents needing a smaller garbage cart to switch the standard size for a smaller one.

Businesses will also receive carts for organics, garbage and recycling. All recyclable materials, both blue and grey box material, can be placed in the same cart. Organics will be introduced to businesses at this stage.
